READING THE BRUCE TRAIL

Walk on the Bruce Trail, The New Field, September 16, 2017

This seminar-in-the-forest began at the site of a 600 year-old Iroquois village that sits on the edge of the escarpment, where it overlooks the land of present-day Toronto. From there we followed the shoreline of an ancient ocean and the ridges left behind by receding glaciers, passing by the barely discernible ruins of farms and industrial activity, travelling along streams and roads, and through schoolyards and backyards. As we walked, we stopped to read stories and songs from Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s book, This Accident of Being Lost, and shared other ideas and stories that helped us to think about past and present occupations of this land.
